Its engine, a 158 horsepower 2.4L I4 affords the 2009 Scion xB plenty of power while racking up impressive fuel efficiency, at 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

The boxy good looks of the 2008 Scion xB explains only part of the appeal of this well-appointed, high-performing, five-passenger vehicle.
The Scion division of Toyota has been successfully designing and marketing their vehicles to appeal to the younger generation for a few years now. When the Scion xB was first introduced for the 2004 model year, it was clearly apparent that there were no other 5 door economy cars with its distinctively unusual box shaped design. Initially, the xB was only available for purchase in California and was gradually available in a few other states, including New York. By 2005, this very reasonably priced vehicle with a roomy interior to accommodate up to 5 passengers, and with the 60/40 split rear seat folded down it was easy to transport a fairly large amount of cargo.
A 1.5 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that delivered 108 horsepower and was mated to a front wheel drive five speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission. Acceleration was respectable and handling crisp, but gas mileage was downright admirable with averages of just over 30 mpg in the city and up to 35 mpg on the highway.
Standard equipment included anti lock-brakes with a panic brake assist feature, stability and traction control, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and door locks and an MP3-compatible CD player. Fifteen-inch steel wheels were standard and available with a choice of wheel covers. For the 2006 model year, the xB received a new head unit design Pioneer audio system; steering wheel mounted audio controls, and an auxiliary jack in addition to a dedicated iPod port. Horsepower was reduced from 108 to 103 due to the implementation of changes necessary to meet new SAE guidelines. Optional equipment included a satellite radio and a front seat headrest mounted rear entertainment system with dual 7 inch LCD displays.
The unusual style and an extensive list of accessories and options have definitely caught the attention of the youth oriented, while more mature drivers may find the style a little too unusual, they have also found the xB to be a very affordable, safety rich, reliable and roomy vehicle. Although there were no 2007 models produced, a brand new generation of Scion xB is available for the 2008 model year.
