Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza 5 passenger subcompact arrived in the spring of 1993, replacing the maturing Loyale, and it was available in either sedan or 5 door wagon style versions. The Impreza was lower in price, smaller in size and lighter in overall weight than Subaru's only other sedan/wagon offering at the time- the Legacy. The Impreza was powered by an expertly engineered 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine that produced 118 horsepower. Both sedan and wagon were available in a baseline L and more upscale LS trim model and both were offered with full time all wheel drive or front wheel drive. A 5 speed manual transmission was part of the standard equipment list, while a 4 speed automatic was optional until a few years later when it became part of the standard equipment for the LS.

As the years passed, the Impreza featured the tried and true drive train and many of the reliable components that were also used in the popular Legacy, which helped to reduce development and manufacturing costs and keep the overall price of the car down. For the 2000 model year, the Impreza was available as the L model coupe, 4 door sedan, 5 door wagon and a sporty 2.5 RS coupe, 2.5 RS sedan and an SUV inspired Outback wagon style. The 2.5 RS models arrived boasting a 2.5 liter turbocharged engine that had better acceleration and more horsepower than the standard 2.2 liter engines found in the other versions of the same vehicle.

For the 2006 model year, all Impreza models received a new grille that was similar to the one found on the more athletically designed B9 Tribeca and a new WRX trim joined the lineup with a more powerful 2.5 liter turbocharged engine that produced 230 horsepower. As of the 2007 model year, the Subaru Impreza had grown into a dynamic driving machine that provided excellent handling and high quality and comfortable interiors. Performance, safety and practicality blend seamlessly in this sporty, well built machine. The Impreza successfully satisfies everyday driving needs as well as one's inner desire to be in command of the road ahead.

Subaru Impreza Reviews by Year

2011 Subaru Impreza
Although the 2011 Subaru Impreza has standard all-wheel drive, which makes it stand out in the affordable small car class, its MSRP range of $17,495 to $20,995 is high for the genre. If the price isn't a deal breaker, there's a lot to be said for the Impreza's performance and sound safety profile.

If you want to test-drive the AWD competition, take a look at the Suzuki SX4, which starts at around $500 less than the Impreza. Also, the Mazda3 is a must test drive, not only because it's fun, but because the sticker shock drops $2,000 (and, like the Impreza, there's an option for either a sedan or a hatchback.).

There are four Impreza trims for 2011, the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, Outback Sport, and 2.5GT. There are two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 170 hp (standard on all trims paired with a five-speed manual), and a 2.5-liter four cylinder with 224 hp available on the 2.5GT. Fuel economy is, alas, unimpressive at 20/27 on the base and 18/25 on the 2.5i Premium. Those are pretty much worst-in-class numbers. more
2010 Subaru Impreza
Estimated by the EPA to deliver 20 mpg in the cities and 27 on the highways, the 2010 Subaru Impreza saves you money at the pumps. The Impreza is available as either a hatchback or sedan, both with standard seating for five.
2009 Subaru Impreza
Completely redesigned in the 2008 model year, the 2009 Subaru Impreza still found ways to come up with new angles, including new trims, more power and upgrades to standard equipment, and especially on the high end trims.
2008 Subaru Impreza
Look at a 2008 Subaru Impreza sitting next to last year's model, and you'd be hard pressed to identify them as the same car. Aside from the name, there is little about this year's Impreza that hasn't been redesigned, at least on the outside.
2007 Subaru Impreza
The 2007 Subaru Impreza is available in four model lines as both a sedan and a wagon. The Impreza 2.5i (sedan and sport wagon) starts from $17,995. The Outback Sport (wagon only) has a base MSRP of $19,195.
