The 2008 Suzuki Reno is priced a little lower than the competing subcompact hatchback economy cars on the market today and it has one of the most powerful engines in its class. Cargo space is ample and the list of standard equipment is long, yet despite these strong points, the Reno is not a highly recommended vehicle due to its sloppy road manners, inconsistency in the quality of materials, below average gas mileage and weak acceleration when equipped with an automatic transmission. The low price and excellent 7 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty help make this car a good value for the money, but not without sacrifice. There have been no changes to the Reno for this model year, and since its introduction for the 2005 model year there have been no significant upgrades or changes.
The Reno is based upon the same platform as the Suzuki Forenza, but its 5 door hatchback styling and shorter stance gives it a slightly sportier look. The one available trim comes standard with some nice features including air conditioning with a cabin air filtration system, heated side view mirrors, tilt steering wheel, power windows and door locks and an 8 speaker CD/MP3 audio system. The Convenience Option Package adds remote keyless entry, cruise control, an alarm system and a leather wrapped gear shift lever and steering wheel that includes controls for the audio system.
Power is provided by a 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that generates 127 horsepower. The standard transmission is a 5 speed manual, and while a 4 speed automatic is optional, performance is significantly better with the manual gearbox. Gas mileage is below average for a subcompact economy car, with the maximum being 20 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway with the manual transmission, and a close 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway with the automatic.
Storage compartments within the mediocre cabin are plentiful and with the rear seat folded down the Reno provides 45 cubic feet of cargo room. Back seat passengers will appreciate the fold down center armrest and ample leg and head room. Despite these and other minor amenities, the long warranty and affordable price, the 2008 Suzuki Reno is lacking too much of everything to be competitive in the subcompact category. Spending just over $1k more than you would for a Reno can definitely buy you an all around better hatchback, for example: Honda Matrix or Nissan Versa.
