The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size sport utility vehicle that was completely redesigned for the 2008 model year. The Sequoia is wider and longer than last years model and can accommodate up to 8 passengers. The increased size appreciated inside the cabin, where the adjustable second row 40/20/40 bench seat can also be configured as two captain's chairs by simply removing and stowing the center seat. The Sequoia is based upon the Toyota Tundra truck platform, but unlike the Tundra, the Sequoia has an independent rear suspension that allows for the incorporation of a fold flat 60/40 split 3rd row seat. With both the 2nd and 3rd row seats folded flat this massive SUV offers and abundant 120 cubic feet of cargo space. Large SUVs such as this one have been losing market share in lieu of smaller and more fuel efficient crossover vehicles that offer similar seating configurations. However, for those large families that need the additional utility and cargo space and can justify the expense, the Sequoia offers a flexible interior design, excellent handling and impressive performance.
This redesigned Sequoia represents its first major overhaul, and while it is a larger vehicle than the previous model year it is also uses approximately 12% less fuel. The first of two engine choices is a fairly economical 4.7 liter V8 that produces 276 horsepower and is mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission. The second is a more powerful 5.7 liter V8 that delivers 381 horsepower. This larger engine works in conjunction with a 6 speed automatic transmission. The Sequoia is capable of towing up to 10,000 pounds, yet brisk acceleration takes it from 0-60 in under 7 seconds. There are three trim levels, all of which are available in either 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. In 4WD mode, the center differential can be locked in 4 Hi and 4 Lo by the driver which offers more flexibility when driven in the snow.
Trims include the SR5, Limited and Platinum versions. The base model SR5 includes a good amount of standard features including 18 inch alloy wheels, tri zone automatic climate control, power windows, mirrors and door locks, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel and stereo system with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. Stepping up to the Limited model will net leather upholstery, a premium JBL sound system, Bluetooth, running boards and heated mirrors. The top of the line Platinum includes 20 inch wheels and an enhanced suspension system, consisting of AVS adaptive shock absorbers and load leveling air springs in the rear. Also included is a sunroof, power lift gate, a navigation system combined with a back up camera, heated and cooled front seats and second row captain's chairs, which decreases seating capacity from 8 to 7. A Tow Option package and a rear seat entertainment system are optional for all models.
Equipped with the 5.7 V8, the Sequoia is the quickest of all the large, full-size SUVs on the market today. The well tuned chassis does a good job of balancing daily highway driving comfort with efficient off road, hauling and towing capabilities. For those in need of serious towing capacity and plenty of passenger and cargo room, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia is one of the better full-size SUV options that will provide a composed ride, good acceleration and a simple yet stylish and highly functional design inside and out.
