2009 Toyota 4Runner Review

The 2009 Toyota 4Runner is a carryover from the prior model year, so it maintains the same versatility and elegant exterior design. With generous powertrain options and the choice of 2WD or 4WD, the Toyota 4Runner can be built to meet each driver's unique needs. While this seven-passenger model is affordable at the intro price, once buyers begin adding accessories the price can quickly climb. Though the SUV's fuel economy is moderate, it simply cannot compete with flex-fuel and hybrid models on the market. Nevertheless, the 4Runner's interior is spacious and has up to forty-two feet of cargo room without the third-row seat in place.

Under the hood, the Toyota 4Runner can be fitted with either a 236 horsepower 4.0L V6 or a more powerful 260 horsepower 4.7L V8. Both engine selections are equipped with Variable Valve Timing which controls the exhaust intake so that the model might conserve fuel. The V6 gets around 16 city MPG and 21 highway MPG, while the V8 is estimated at 14 city MPG and 17 highway MPG. A five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive is standard with both engine selections. Independent front suspension gives the 4Runner a smoother ride, while Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Start Assist Control ensure that the SUV does not roll during starting when on an incline or decline. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control are also standard on the 2009 4Runner.

Inside, features range from a CFC-free automatic climate control to a six-disc in-dash CD changer with an MP3 input jack. Buyers can upgrade to a premium JBL Synthesis audio system, and a detachable TomTom navigation device can be added as well. The 4Runner has leather-trimmed interior with a power adjustable driver's seat and heated front seats. A HomeLink Universal Transceiver is included too. This unique opener actually controls not just the owner's garage door, but also the gating, lighting, and security systems in his or her home. The auto-dimming rearview mirror is equipped with a compass, and two auxiliary power outlets are included for convenient recharging of electronic devices.

Buyers can upgrade to a stylish Urban Runner package that includes items like an improved audio system with the TomTom nav unit, Alcantara seating inserts, and 18-inch alloy wheels. There is also a Trail Edition of the 2009 4Runner available that adds high-performance shocks, black tubular side steps, and a roof rack for camping or sporting equipment.

Overall, the 2009 Toyota 4Runner is a easily adaptable SUV that works just as well in the city as it does in demanding off-road conditions. With a base price of $28,640, the 4Runner is an affordable alternative to a luxury full-size SUV like the Porsche Cayenne, and its customizing packages give the 4Runner a distinctive style from other SUVs on the road.
