Toyota Yaris Hatchback

The economical Toyota Yaris Hatchback was introduced in America for the 2007 model year and shares the same drivetrain and frame as the Yaris Sedan. However, aside from the frame and drivetrain, there are actually relatively few similarities between the hatchback and the sedan. The hatchback is in fact built at an entirely different plant than the sedan and is manufactured with completely different sheet metal as well as different components throughout. The two door hatchback seats up to five passengers and has ample cargo room for a subcompact car.

The unusual exterior design, with its snub nose and bubble inspired shape is definitely unique. Features and frills are few for this small car, designed to attract younger drivers and those who are strictly looking for an economical form of transportation. The 1.4 liter inline 4 cylinder engine is not overly powerful, but it is adequate for this small vehicle and incredibly fuel efficient. The handling is responsive and gas mileage is impressive.

The interior of the hatchback is obviously different from the sedan. The hatchback features three glove compartments for storage and instrument gauges centrally stacked above the steering column. The optional adjustable rear seat slides and reclines and works to increase passenger comfort and permit more cargo configurations.

Toyota's reputation for safety and reliability is not hindered by the low list price of the Yaris. Safety features for the Yaris Hatchback include front seat side air bags and side curtain airbags as well as anti lock brakes. It is also noteworthy to mention that although new to the American marketplace, the Toyota Yaris Hatchback and Sedan have been available to the European market since 1999 and has since become Toyota's best selling model in Europe and was also recognized as the 2000 European Car of the Year. American accolades have not yet been awarded, but for those who are not seeking an industry sensation, the Yaris provides a basically comfortable form of transportation featuring fuel efficient mechanical reliability wrapped in a uniquely designed exterior.

The 2010 Toyota Yaris hatchback delivers 29 mpg in the cities and a whopping 36 on the highways. It is not a hybrid! And even though some hybrids on the market do deliver superior fuel economy, the Yaris doesn't cost nearly as much. With manufacturer's suggested pricing ranging between $12,355 and $13,115, the Yaris presents excellent value per dollar. Let's just say that it would take a lot of driving to make up for the sticker price differences via savings at fuel pumps. And don't let the those low numbers fool you: the Yaris hatchback has been very well-crafted - both inside and out.

The 2010 Yaris Hatchback from Toyota is a front wheel driven vehicle. It features a 1.5L 106-horsepower 4-cylinder engine that is joined to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox (5-speed auto optional).
