Referred to for years as the 'pocket rocket' in the automotive arena, the 2008 Volkswagen GTI is an affordable, no frills hatchback suitable for younger drivers, commuters, and those who are looking for a small, fuel efficient form of basic transportation. That is not to say that basic comfort, convenience or performance features have been overlooked, in fact the GTI is a performance based hatchback with a full array of standard features including xenon HID headlights, full power accessories, cruise control, bolstered front seats, a 60/40 split rear seat and a stereo system with steering wheel mounted controls to operate the CD/MP3 player and satellite radio system. The Autobahn Options Package adds heated leather seats and a sunroof.
Offered as both a 2 door coupe and a 4 door sedan, the GTI's performance is attributed to a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that delivers 200 horsepower. Transmissions include a standard six speed manual or a six speed automated manual that allows for operation in a fully automatic mode or manual operation via steering wheel mounted paddle controls. In the 0-60 test, both models come in under 7 seconds.
The original GTI, which arrived during the 1980's, promised German engineered performance in an affordable, fuel efficient package-and that promise has been delivered on in the past, but exceptionally so for the 2008 model year. The 2008 Volkswagen GTI is truly fun to drive with nimble handling, a more solidly built construction. In addition, the noise level is minimal, and cargo space is flexible thanks to the more than 15 feet that becomes available when the rear seats are folded down. Add all this to a full array of safety features including anti lock brakes, six airbags and stability and traction control and you have yourself a well equipped economy car with a uniquely VW style.
