The 2009 Volkswagen GLI is a carryover from the prior model year that features a powerful engine, racing-inspired design, and a sturdy frame that improves handling and better protects passengers. However, potential buyers might be off-put by the lack of engine choices, and some could find that the GLI's exterior lacks classic Volkswagen details. This four-door five-passenger sedan is moderately priced, but some consumers may think that the cost is too much for a model with so few options. Nevertheless, the GLI's Autobahn trim does include a number of sporty upgrades.
Under the hood, the 2009 GLI is fitted with an impressive 200 horsepower 2.0L I4 that produces around 207-lbs per foot of torque. This turbo engine only drinks in about 21 city MPG and 29 highway MPG, so those looking to be a bit "greener" will accomplish their mission with the GLI without having to opt for a less powerful model like the Saturn ION. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the model, while buyers can advance to a six-speed automatic with overdrive. Anti-lock brakes, independent front and rear suspension, and traction control are all standard as well. An electronic stabilization program automatically adjusts to help prevent accidents on poor road conditions or when a driver loses control.
Inside, the 2009 GLI is fully equipped with an anti-theft alarm system, cruise control, and a premium audio system with a six-disc CD changer. The instrument cluster features a display that will alert drivers when a gas cap is not fully tightened as well. A three-month trial subscription to XM Satellite Radio is provided that gives owners commercial-free listening to a number of news, music, and weather channels. A leather-wrapped steering wheel includes built-in audio controls, so drivers need not even take their hands off of the wheel to adjust volume or channel settings. Two roof-mounted antennae search for the best signal, insuring that drivers will get the best quality stations anywhere they might be driving.
Volkswagen features some of the most impressive warranties also. The 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, along with four years of free roadside assistance, is hard to match. Not only that, a twelve-year corrosion protection warranty is included as well.
On the whole, the 2009 Volkswagen GLI is a solid sedan for a reasonable price. With a base MSRP of $24,590, the GLI is a great pick for individuals or small families on a budget. However, some might be disappointed with the lack of drivetrain options, but others could be drawn in by the 2009 GLI's sporty exterior and impressive fuel economy.
