2009 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon Review

While the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon certainly looks like a station wagon, its drivetrain and features make it feel like a compact SUV, similar to the Volvo XC70, with all the trimmings. With a number of drivetrain options, the Volkswagen Jetta Wagon (also referred to as the SportWagen) can be customized to fit any driver's needs, and the available additions allow buyers to give their Jetta Wagon a personal touch. The low introductory rate, sleek exterior design, and roomy interior make the 2009 Jetta Wagon a practical alternative to a more fuel-hungry SUV.

Under the hood and behind the shiny chrome grille, the Volkswagen Jetta can be fitted with either a 140 horsepower 2.0L I4, a turbocharged 170 horsepower 2.5L I5, or a turbocharged 200 horsepower 2.0L I4. With the turbo engine options, the Jetta Wagon can really be made to have a sporty feel that surpasses all of the other standard wagons on the market. In addition to the gasoline-powered models, there is also the TDI Diesel-Biodiesel model which gets 30 mpg city and 41 mpg hwy. Four different transmissions are also available on the four trims: standard five-speed manual for the two lower trims, standard six-speed manual for the higher trims, available six-speed automatic with Tiptronic and Sport mode for the lower, and six-speed DSG automatic with Tiptronic and Sport mode for the higher. An anti-lock braking system is standard on all trims, and the Jetta has independent front McPherson struts with a stabilizer bar for a smoother ride. An Electronic Stabilization program also is featured on all Jetta Wagon trims. This program keeps the vehicle going in its intended direction if control is lost and can prevent the model from rolling over as well.

Inside, the 2009 Jetta Wagon is stocked with conveniences and techie gadgetry. Single-zone climate control, anti-theft alarm system, a brake pad wear indication located in the instrument cluster, power locks and windows, and three auxiliary power outlets are all included with the standard Jetta. The base level CD player has MP3 capabilities, which means that driver's can sync their music player with the audio system inside the Wagon, and buyers can upgrade to a premium sound system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer and ten speakers. A navigation unit is available on the higher trims, while all trims get a wealth of storage areas, rear passenger ventilation for heat and A/C, and a pollen filter in the vents.

The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta's warranty program is among the best available with a five year or 60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and roadside assistance for up to four years. Scheduled maintenance will be taken care of at no charge for the first three years of purchase as well.

Overall, the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon is an elegant family vehicle with a sporty edge. Buyers that are looking for a fresh take on the stale station wagon will find that the Jetta Wagon is a welcome alternative. Priced at around $18,999, the 2009 Jetta Wagon is also affordable for families even on the tightest budget.
