The all-wheel drive 2008 Volvo XC70 midsize crossover offers a fuel efficient and practical alternative to larger, gas guzzling SUV's. Although not suitable for heavy hauling and towing, its car like handling dynamics combined with its raised suspension and Volvo's excellent all wheel drive system enables drivers to conquer snow covered roads and travel through muddy terrain with ease. Passenger and cargo areas are ample and well designed. The XC70 was completely redesigned for the 2008 model year, with changes including a refreshed interior and exterior as well as more horsepower. The XC70 is about 4 inches longer this year and is powered by a new 235 horsepower engine. However, even with this additional power, the vehicle's weight hinders the motor's ability to offer more than just adequate acceleration. Like all Volvo's, state of the art safety features are abundant and the modern flavored interior is designed for comfort and convenience.
The 5-door, 5-passenger XC70 is available in only one trim that is very well equipped with a full array of safety features and full power accessories. Other standard features include 16 inch alloy wheels, roof rails, front and rear fog lights, a theft deterrent system, heated side view mirrors with integrated turn signals, remote keyless entry, dual zone climate control, tilt/telescopic leather wrapped steering wheel, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo system with steering wheel mounted audio controls, cruise control, fold flat passenger seat, 40/20/40 split folding backseat with 2 integrated booster seats and a trip computer. There are several option packages that bundle some of the most popular non-standard features as well as individual options including a rear seat entertainment center and a navigation system.
Power is provided by a 3.2 liter inline 6 cylinder engine that delivers 235 horsepower and is mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission with manual shift override capabilities. EPA estimates of 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway are not especially admirable, but still better than many larger SUVs.
The capable and safety rich 2008 Volvo XC70 features exceptional interior fit and finish and is very comfortable, though not particularly luxurious. Taking advantage of the optional leather upholstery can create a more upscale look and feel. Folding down the rear seats creates a very large 71 cubic foot cargo area. Although not capable enough for serious off road excursions, the all wheel drive XC70 does perform exceptionally well when driven on snow covered road ways.
