Volvo V50

When the Volvo V50 was introduced to the public at the Bologna Motor Show in 2003, some critics were unimpressed. Though the exterior certainly contrasted with Volvo's signature boxy style, it was unadorned and simply lacked panache. Reviewers pointed out that while the V50 was unquestionably different than other models in Volvo's lineup; it still did not match up to other station wagon designs on the market. Though first impressions are important, the Volvo V50 has managed to win over many of its earliest detractors. And when in 2008 the Volvo V50 received a makeover, reviewers were starting to line up to get a look at the new and improved edition.

Volvo has made headway with the V50's engine choices. North American buyers can choose from a 2.4L I5 that reaches up to 168 horsepower or a 2.4L T5 turbocharged I5 engine that produces around 230 horsepower. A flex fuel selection is also available for those concerned with rises gas prices and environmentally friendly transportation options. Volvo is being praised nationwide for its attempt to decrease the financial burden put on Americans by fuel costs. There is a PZEV version of the Volvo V50 available for purchase in only thirteen American states and Mexico because of poor sales. Apparently, sales were the highest in the selected states, so Volvo decided to continue sales in only those states and Mexico.

The Volvo V50 replaced the wagon trim of the Volvo V40, and some reviewers think that it should have only remained a trim level rather than a standalone model. However, with Volvo's recent attempts to lower prices and become more eco-friendly, others are claiming that the model will make it on its own just fine. Even bloggers are getting in on the station wagon action by critiquing Volvo's music choice on their V50 website (alternative grunge rock). Some are questioning whether Volvo is trying to appeal to a younger audience, and others are saying the Volvo V50 is simply putting up a front and not being what it truly is - a family station wagon.

There are rumors abounding that the Volvo V50 is going to be gaining a few inches in the next model year; however, Volvo has yet to confirm the suspicions. Critics wonder how they'll pull off extra weight and great fuel economy, but many are hopeful that it is possible. Overall, the general opinion among critics is that Volvo should refrain from referring to its V50 as "hip" and "cool" because that is simply not true.
